And they were coming their way.

Before they knew what was happening the two animals were showered by the fiery light. The fox jumped out of the way of the sparking flames, but the Castle Cat was not as quick. Some of the sparks landed on his back and his fur began to smoulder. The fox watched, horrified as her friend started to run down the rock, miaowing with fright, his thick fur on fire.

Without a thought for her own safety, the fox immediately set off after her terrified friend. As soon as she got close enough she leapt on to the Castle Cat’s back and rolled him over and over down the hill until the fire on his back was out. The grass was quite wet so it did not take long.

When the two animals finally came to rest they lay in complete silence while the fireworks continued to rage overhead.

Finally the noise was over, and the crowds began to make their way home.

It was the Castle Cat who spoke first. His voice was a little wobbly. “You saved my life. I am so lucky to have such a loyal and brave friend. How can I ever thank you?”

“I did what I had to do,” replied the fox quietly.

She was so relieved to find that her friend was safe and sound, apart from some singed fur. “Let’s go home.”

Slowly the fox and the cat made their way up through the woods towards Edinburgh Castle. When they reached the fox’s den she turned to the Castle Cat and said, “I’m glad that wasn’t the Tattoo.”

“So am I,” he replied. “I much prefer the Tattoo.” And he padded off into the darkness.
